NOTES - READ BEFORE INSTALLING BOWTIEXP
(This section updated May 5 2009) OVERVIEW OF VERSION HIERARCHY
As risk management is an ever-evolving industry, BowTieXP adapts to bring new features to the industry. New versions are offered to enhance the product, and downloads are not known to have significant issues affecting integrity of data. New versions are on average released every 4-8 weeks, but earlier if needed.
TERMS:
Beta versions often have new database structures or modules that need proving. Use of them for live files is not advised - always have a backup under the old version if you are have been offered this version to explore or solve a need for the new features.
Pre-release versions are expected to be proved as reliable, as they will have minor changes to an earlier stable version.
Current or Stable versions were once Pre-release versions that have been promoted to Release status, having undergone longer use by clients / testers.
For Versions 3.6.0 and above, except for software downloads type (C),(D) and (H) below, before you can run BowTieXP, your computer must have the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 installed. Versions below this (e.g. 3.4.15) run on .NET Framework 1.1.
Most computers with Miscrosoft XP or Vista with Windows updates enabled will have .NET Frameworks 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 already installed. However, BowTieXP files of type (C),(D) and (H) below include the .NET Framework. These compilations can therefore be enable installation of BowTieXP without the need for intervention from local administrators. No setup changes to the Registry are made, and impact on the C drive is minimal.
DO I HAVE .NET FRAMEWORK INSTALLED?
To determine if you already have the required .NET Framework installed, either
a) check the installed programs list in the Control Panel for Microsoft
.NET 1.1 or .NET 2.0;
b) download BowTieXP (version without .NET) and try to install it and run it - BowTieXP will advise if the required
Framework is missing;
c) read this page.
DOWNLOADING .NET FRAMEWORK
Users who have the ability to install the Framework may consider doing so, to allow smaller BowTieXP file downloads and versatility
to use any other .NET applications.
If your computer does not have the correct .NET Framework installed, you can download version
2.0 here, or
version 1.1 here.
You can also obtain the 1.1 and 2.0 .NET Framework from Windows Update (and of course they can co-exist on your computer).
Existing users should not install the latest version of the software without:
1) First making sure they have (or making a request for) an Activation Code suitable for this version. (This will only apply if upgrading from any version 2
to any version 3, or in future, v.3n to v.4n, etc. Users must have a current Support & Maintenance Agreement (S&M) in order to receive a new Activation Code.
2) Making a backup of their BowTieXP files before installing software. - DO NOT replace or delete the v2.x Bowtie.exe file until you have v.3 working; DO NOT delete
case files or BowTie.exe files below 3.4.15 with versions numbered 3.6.x or higher until tested OK, as files saved in 3.6.x cannot work on older versions.
(The same will apply for v3.n and v.4n, etc). Click the info button to request more information - leave a message advising what you want to do and how we may contact you.
