Safety Case Development
In 1996 the Safety Case regime became an integral part of Australian petroleum offshore exploration health and safety legislation. This regime represented a dramatic change in safety legislation.
Drilling contractors, rather than complying with prescriptive legislation, now had to demonstrate that the levels of risk on the drilling facility were acceptable and to show how this was being managed.
Since 1996, Safety & Risk Practice consultants have been involved in the development of seven Australian Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit Safety Cases (Jack Bates, ENSCO 56 and 104, Atwood Southern Cross, Vicksburg and Falcon; and the Global SantaFe Jack Ryan).
Specific involvement has included;
- Development of Safety Case components - Facility Description and Safety management
- Project Management
- Review of Formal Safety Assessments
- Training and Implementation of the Safety Case process
The Safety Case approach for self-assessment of hazards and demonstration of risk management is now being implemented in transport, aviation and onshore hazardous facilities.
